A paper plane across the reading room
They were strangers at facing desks in the library’s reading room. Benjamin, too shy to speak, folded a note into a paper aeroplane and sailed it over the lamps to Eliza. It read, simply, “Coffee?” She wrote “Tea.” and flew it back.

Sunday teacups
Tea, it turned out, was a whole language. Every Sunday since has ended the same way — two mismatched cups, a pot going cold, and an argument about which biscuit is superior that neither of them intends to win.

The very rusty tandem
They bought a bicycle-built-for-two at a barn sale for eleven dollars, wobbled the length of the lane, and fell into the hedgerow laughing. They have kept it, and it still only turns left.

A picnic in the meadow
Benjamin packed the picnic basket, walked Eliza out to the far meadow where the poppies were up, and forgot the entire speech he’d rehearsed. She said yes before he found the ring under the sandwiches.
