Laura was lost looking for the ferry; Daniel was the only person on the pier who spoke enough English to be wrong about the timetable too. They missed the boat and split a granita instead — she has never once let him forget the timetable.

A London flat with a single potted lemon on the balcony that refused to fruit, and a standing habit of cooking Sunday lunch far too big for two and inviting whoever was around.

Daniel had a whole speech ready at the top of the village. A passing scooter drowned most of it, Laura said yes before he reached the end, and they sat on the warm steps watching the town go gold and decided, then and there, this was where they’d marry.
